Complete Australian engagement ring size guide โ full AU letter size chart F to Z+, diamond size recommendations, secret sizing tips, instant calculator and international conversions
Australia uses a letter-based ring sizing system (F through Z+) that is identical to the UK and New Zealand standard. For engagement rings specifically, sizing accuracy is critical โ a poorly fitting engagement ring is uncomfortable to wear daily, difficult to style with a wedding band, and more costly to resize post-setting. The most common Australian women's engagement ring size is AU N (inner diameter 17.2 mm, US 7, EU 54), though sizes L through P cover the majority of women.

The size of a diamond is measured in carats (ct). A larger finger requires a proportionally larger diamond for the stone to appear visually balanced on the hand. The recommendations below are a general style guide based on common AU women's engagement ring sizes โ not strict rules. Personal preference, budget, and setting style all play a role.
| ๐ฆ๐บ AU Size | Circumference (mm) | Finger Type | ๐ Recommended Diamond | Visual Balance Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IโJ | 47.8โ49.1 mm | Slim / Petite fingers | 0.50 โ 0.80 ct | Smaller stones look proportionally larger |
| KโL | 50.4โ51.7 mm | Slender fingers | 0.70 โ 1.00 ct | 0.75 ct round brilliant ideal |
| M โญ | 53.0 mm | Common women's size | 1.00 โ 1.80 ct | Most popular engagement range |
| N โญ | 54.3 mm | Average Australian women's | 1.00 โ 2.20 ct | Most common AU engagement size |
| O | 55.7 mm | Slightly larger fingers | 1.10 โ 2.50 ct | Oval or elongated cuts work well |
| P | 57.0 mm | Larger fingers | 1.20 โ 2.80 ct | Halo settings add visual size |
| Q | 58.3 mm | Larger fingers | 1.30 โ 3.00 ct | Elongated shapes like pear/oval recommended |
| R | 59.6 mm | Larger / wider fingers | 1.50 โ 3.20 ct | Wider band balances larger stone |
| SโT | 60.9โ62.2 mm | Wide / men's range | 1.80 โ 4.00 ct | Wide flat settings work well for AU TโU |
Most popular cut in Australia. Suits all AU sizes. A 1.0 ct round on AU N (17.2 mm) measures approximately 6.5 mm across and looks balanced on most women's hands.
Elongated shape visually slims fingers. Ideal for AU OโQ (slightly larger sizes). A 1.5 ct oval appears significantly larger than a 1.5 ct round due to its surface area.
Second most popular in Australia after round. Square shape suits AU MโP well. Measures slightly smaller face-up than a round of the same carat weight.
Elongates the finger beautifully. Popular for AU O+ sizes. Best set with the point facing toward the fingernail. A 1.2 ct pear looks larger than a 1.2 ct round.
Sleek, architectural step-cut. Suits slim AU JโM fingers. Has a large visible table โ requires higher clarity grade (VS1+) as inclusions are more visible than in brilliant cuts.
Romantic choice, best in 0.75 ct+ for the shape to be clearly defined. Most flattering on AU LโO fingers where the finger width allows the shape to show clearly.
Important: Engagement rings are almost always worn on the left-hand ring finger in Australia. This finger is typically 0.25 to 0.5 AU sizes larger on the dominant hand. Measure the specific finger you plan to wear the ring on โ do not assume it is the same size as your other fingers.
The most reliable method. Borrow a ring she wears on her left-hand ring finger without her noticing. Take it to any Australian jeweller โ they can measure the inner diameter in seconds and give you the exact AU size. Return it before she notices.
If you can't take a ring to a jeweller, place it flat on white paper and trace the inside with a sharp pencil. Measure the diameter of the traced circle in millimetres and use the diameter column in the size chart above to find the AU size.
A trusted friend, sister, or mother likely knows or can find out discreetly. They may even have shared ring sizing information already, or can arrange a casual "ring try-on" moment with another ring as a decoy.
Place her finger alongside yours while she is asleep or unaware. Mark on your own finger where hers ends. Then measure the circumference up to that mark in mm and look up the chart. This is a rough estimate but works as a starting point.
Slide a borrowed ring onto a ring mandrel (a tapered cone with size markings, available from craft stores and online for under $15 AUD). The size where the ring stops and sits snugly is her AU size.
If all else fails, the safest approach is to buy AU N (the most common Australian women's engagement ring size, 17.2 mm diameter). Most rings can be resized by 1โ2 sizes after the proposal. Discuss a resize appointment with your jeweller at the time of purchase โ many Australian jewellers include one free resize within the first 6 months.
โ ๏ธ Rings that cannot be resized include eternity bands (stones set all the way around), very wide bands, rings with inlays (wood, carbon fibre), and some titanium or tungsten rings. If she is likely to want one of these styles, sizing accuracy is even more critical before purchase.
Cut a strip approximately 3 mm wide and 10 cm long from any piece of paper. Receipt paper or card stock works well โ avoid stretchy or fabric materials.
Wrap the strip around the base of the finger where the engagement ring will sit. It should be snug but not tight โ you should be able to slip the paper off without discomfort.
Gently slide the loop up over your knuckle. If the knuckle is noticeably wider, size to the knuckle so the ring can be put on and removed without difficulty.
Mark the overlap point with a pen. Lay flat on a ruler and measure in millimetres. This is your inner circumference. Find it in the Circumference (mm) column above or enter it in the calculator.
Fingers are smallest in the morning and largest in the afternoon. For engagement rings worn daily, measure in the afternoon when fingers are at their largest for the most comfortable everyday fit. Average the three results.
