How to Use This Printable Chart

โš ๏ธ
You MUST print at 100% / Actual Size. In your browser's print dialog, set Scale to 100% โ€” never "Fit to Page" or "Shrink to Fit". Before using the ring circles, always verify the built-in 100 mm ruler on the chart prints exactly 100 mm (10 cm) with a physical ruler. If it doesn't, adjust your printer scale setting and reprint.
A

โญ• Method A โ€” Existing Ring

Place your existing ring over the printed circles. Find the circle where the inside edge of your ring aligns perfectly with the printed circle's inner edge. The AU letter beside that circle is your ring size. This is the most accurate printable method.

B

โœ‚๏ธ Method B โ€” Finger Wrap Strip

Cut out the paper strip ruler printed at the bottom of the chart. Wrap it snugly around your ring finger, mark the overlap with a pen, then measure that length in mm. Match the mm reading to the circumference column in the conversion table.

C

๐Ÿ“ Method C โ€” Diameter Measurement

Measure the inner diameter of an existing ring using a ruler or digital calipers. Enter that mm value into the Diameter column of the conversion table below to find your AU letter size. Calipers (available from hardware stores for under $15) give the most precise reading.

How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

1

Cut a narrow strip of non-stretch paper โ€” about 1 cm wide and 12 cm long

Printer paper or cardstock works best. Avoid tissue paper or any stretchy material as these compress and give inaccurate readings. The strip needs to be stiff enough to hold its shape when marked.

2

Wrap the strip snugly around the base of your ring finger on the correct hand

In Australia, engagement and wedding rings are worn on the left ring finger. Wrap so the paper is snug but comfortable โ€” like a well-fitted ring, not tight. You should be able to slide the paper very slightly.

3

Mark the overlap with a fine pen while the strip is still on your finger

Never remove the strip before marking โ€” it loosens immediately. Use a fine-tip pen for accuracy. A thick or smudged mark can add 2 mm of error to your reading, potentially shifting you a full AU size.

4

Measure from the start edge to your pen mark in millimetres

Lay the strip flat on a ruler. Your circumference reading in mm is your key measurement. Look up this number in the Circumference column of the conversion chart, or enter it into the calculator above.

5

Measure 3 times โ€” average the readings, and always choose the larger AU letter if between sizes

Finger size varies throughout the day. Measure morning, midday, and afternoon. Average the three mm readings. If your average falls between two AU sizes, always choose the larger letter for comfortable everyday wear.

Circumference โ†” Diameter Formula
Diameter (mm) = Circumference (mm) รท 3.14159
Example: 53.1 mm รท 3.14159 = 16.9 mm = AU M (US 6ยฝ) โ€” average women's size
โœ…
Best time to measure in Australia: Measure in the afternoon โ€” your fingers are closest to their real everyday size then. Avoid measuring first thing in the morning (fingers are smallest), after exercise (swollen), or in extreme heat or cold. Australian summer heat can increase finger size by up to one full AU letter.

Printing Tips for Accuracy

  • โš™๏ธ Set print scale to exactly 100% (Actual Size). In Chrome: File โ†’ Print โ†’ More Settings โ†’ Scale = 100. In Firefox: File โ†’ Print โ†’ Page Setup โ†’ Scale = 100%. In Safari: File โ†’ Print โ†’ Scale = 100%. Never use "Fit to Page", "Fill Page", or "Auto".
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Use standard A4 paper (210 ร— 297 mm) โ€” the default paper size in Australia. If printing from overseas, ensure the paper size is set to A4, not US Letter, as this can affect scaling.
  • ๐Ÿ“ Always verify the 100 mm ruler on the printed page before using any ring circles. Place a physical ruler against the printed ruler bar. If it doesn't measure exactly 100 mm (10 cm), do not use the chart โ€” adjust scale and reprint.
  • ๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ Enable "Print backgrounds" or "Background graphics" in your browser print settings. This ensures the coloured ring circles and highlight rows print correctly. Without this, circles may appear as plain outlines only.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก For best results, use a laser printer. Inkjet printers may slightly bleed ink on the circle edges, affecting accuracy by up to 0.5 mm. A laser print gives the sharpest circle edges for precise ring placement comparison.
  • โœ‚๏ธ Cut out individual circles for easier comparison. Once printed and verified to scale, cut out the ring circle closest to your size. Hold your ring over the cutout on a flat white surface for the clearest size comparison against the inner edge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I print the Australian ring size chart at the correct scale? โ–ผ
Open the print dialog (Ctrl+P or Cmd+P), then set the scale to exactly 100% โ€” also called "Actual Size" in some browsers. Do not use "Fit to Page" or "Shrink". After printing, verify the 100 mm ruler bar on the chart measures exactly 10 cm with a physical ruler. If it's even 1โ€“2 mm off, the ring circles will be inaccurate and should not be used for sizing.
What is the most accurate way to use a printable ring chart? โ–ผ
The most accurate printable method is placing an existing ring over the printed circles. Hold the ring flat against the printed page and find the circle whose inner printed edge aligns precisely with the inside edge of your ring. This is more reliable than the paper strip method because it directly compares physical ring measurements. Always use an existing ring from the same finger and same hand you intend to wear the new ring on.
Is AU ring sizing the same as UK sizing? โ–ผ
Yes โ€” Australian, British, and New Zealand ring sizes are identical. AU size M is the same as UK size M: same inner diameter, same circumference, same physical ring. This means any UK printable ring sizer, UK ring size guide, or UK jeweller's measurement applies directly in Australia without any conversion needed.
Can I save this ring size chart as a PDF? โ–ผ
Yes. In your browser's print dialog, instead of selecting a physical printer, choose "Save as PDF" or "Microsoft Print to PDF". Ensure the scale is set to 100% before saving. When opening the PDF to print later, make sure to print it at 100% scale (not "Fit to page") โ€” the PDF itself doesn't enforce the scale, so you must set this each time you print from it.
My ring size falls between two circles on the chart โ€” what do I do? โ–ผ
Always choose the larger of the two AU sizes. Fingers naturally fluctuate throughout the day โ€” they're smallest in the morning and largest in the late afternoon and in warm weather. A ring that fits snugly in the morning may become uncomfortably tight by afternoon. Choosing the larger size keeps your ring comfortable all day. A jeweller can always make a ring slightly smaller; making it larger requires cutting and resoldering.
Does the printable ring size chart work for wide rings? โ–ผ
The printable circles show standard ring diameters. For wide wedding bands (6 mm or wider), you should order ยฝ to 1 full AU size larger than the size shown by the circles. Wide bands cover more skin surface and press against the knuckle differently, making them feel tighter than a narrow ring at the exact same diameter. If you're sizing for a band wider than 5 mm, add ยฝ AU letter to whatever the circles indicate.
What does the circumference measurement mean and how do I measure it? โ–ผ
The circumference is the distance all the way around the inside of a ring โ€” or equivalently, the distance around your finger where the ring will sit. You measure it by wrapping a narrow strip of paper around your finger, marking the overlap, then measuring the strip length in mm. This is the "finger circumference" in the chart. The diameter is the straight-line distance across the inside of the ring. The two are related by the formula: Diameter = Circumference รท 3.14159.
How do I convert a US ring size to an Australian AU size? โ–ผ
Use the conversion table on this page or the calculator above. Common conversions: US 6 = AU Lยฝ, US 6.5 = AU M, US 7 = AU Nยฝ, US 8 = AU P, US 9 = AU Rยฝ, US 10 = AU Tยฝ, US 11 = AU Vยฝ. Note: Do not assume US size 10 = AU 10 โ€” AU sizes use letters, not numbers. The safest approach when ordering internationally is to provide the inner diameter in millimetres, which is a universal measurement accepted by all jewellers.
