This is the most practical method when you have only paper, a pen and a ruler. Paper is preferable to elastic string because it is flatter and less likely to stretch. Use a strip roughly 5โ7 mm wide so it resembles a normal ring band without becoming bulky.
Example: a consistent 52 mm wrap indicates an inner circumference near 52 mm, an inner diameter near 16.55 mm and approximately EU 52 / US 6 / UK M.
A narrow sewing or tailorโs tape provides a direct circumference reading. It is quick, but a wide tape can bridge over the natural curves of the finger and a stiff tape can sit looser than a ring.
Tip: when the tape is wider than the planned ring, repeat with a narrow paper strip and compare the two readings.
Floss is useful when paper and a flexible tape are unavailable, but it requires careful tension. Soft yarn, elastic cord and loosely woven string can stretch, sink into the skin or change length after removal.

Practical rule: use two different methods and accept the result only when both measurements are close. A professional jewellerโs finger-gauge set remains the safest final check for costly, custom-made or non-resizable jewellery.

Check the 50 mm line first. Cut the outer shape, open the slot and pull the pointed end through it. Read the circumference number that aligns with the slot. Do not use the tool when the test line is not exactly 50 mm.

Very cold fingers can measure smaller, while heat and recent exercise can make them temporarily fuller. Allow your hands to return to a comfortable indoor temperature.
Take readings at different times and on at least two days. A reliable size is supported by a cluster of similar measurements, not one isolated number.
The same named finger can differ between left and right hands. Measure the finger where the ring will actually be worn.
Do not measure immediately after strenuous activity, a hot shower or when your hands are noticeably swollen. Wait until they feel normal.
The strip, belt or tape should form a straight loop around the finger. A diagonal wrap creates a longer and misleading measurement.
The loop should be snug enough not to slide freely but loose enough to pass over the knuckle without pain or force.
Some fingers narrow significantly below the knuckle. Measuring only the base can produce a size that will not pass over the joint, while measuring only the knuckle can produce a ring that spins at the base.
Take three comfortable circumference readings where the ring will sit.
Use the same material and tension. Do not force the strip tightly into the skin.
