Men's rings are on average 2โ3 US sizes larger than women's. Men's engagement and wedding rings are also typically wider (6โ10 mm bands), which means you almost always need to add at least half a size to your measured size for comfort. Never use a women's sizing guide for a men's ring.

In most Western countries (Australia, UK, USA, Canada, South Africa), men wear engagement and wedding rings on the left ring finger โ same as women. This is the tradition most jewellers default to when sizing men's engagement rings.
Typically 1โ2 sizes smaller than right hand ring fingerIn many European countries (Germany, Austria, Norway, Spain, India) and some religious traditions, men wear engagement and wedding rings on the right ring finger. If the ring will be worn on the right hand, always measure the right hand โ it is typically half a size larger for right-handed men.
Right hand = ~0.5 size larger for right-handed menSome men choose to wear engagement rings on the index finger, middle finger, or pinky based on personal preference or cultural tradition. Always confirm which specific finger and which hand before measuring โ sizes vary significantly between fingers on the same hand.
Always measure the exact intended fingerBest method for men's fingers due to larger size and knuckle variation
Use a clean, non-stretchy piece of paper. A strip cut from an A4 sheet works perfectly. Avoid tissue paper or paper towel โ they stretch and give inaccurate readings.
Wrap the strip around the base of the correct finger on the correct hand. It should sit where a ring naturally rests โ snug against skin without indenting it. Ensure no twists in the paper.
Hold the strip in place with your other hand, then make a clear mark with a pen exactly where the end of the strip meets the body of the strip going around the finger. This marked length is your finger circumference.
Lay the strip flat on a table and measure from the end to your mark in millimetres. For example: 61 mm. This is your finger circumference. Now match this to the chart below or enter it in the calculator.
For men: always check knuckle clearance. After measuring the base circumference, also wrap the strip around the widest part of the knuckle. If the knuckle reads 4+ mm larger than the base, see the Wide Bands & Knuckle section below.
Fastest method if you have a tailor's or sewing tape measure
A tailor's or sewing tape is ideal. Do not use a metal builder's tape (too rigid) or an elastic tape (stretches and gives false readings). The tape must have mm markings.
Same technique as the paper strip โ wrap at the base of the intended finger on the correct hand, snug but not tight. Keep the tape flat with no twists.
Note the reading in mm. Repeat three times and average the results. For men, typical readings will be between 57 mm and 67 mm for most sizes (US 8 to US 11).
Men's fingers tend to change more with temperature and activity than women's. For the most accurate result, measure in the evening after normal daily activity โ not immediately after the gym, manual labour, or in cold weather.
Best method for secret gift sizing โ no measuring on his finger required
Find a ring that fits the specific finger you are buying for. If buying for the left ring finger, the ring must be from the left ring finger โ not from another finger or the other hand.
Place the ring on a piece of white paper, trace the inside of the ring in a full circle, and measure the inner diameter across the widest point in mm. Alternatively, lay a ruler across the inside of the ring and read the inner diameter directly.
Find the matching row in the Diameter (mm) column of the chart below. For example: inner diameter of 19.8 mm = US Size 10 = AU/UK Size Tยฝ = EU Size 62.
This is the single most accurate secret method. A well-fitted existing ring gives a direct diameter measurement that requires no guesswork. If in doubt between two sizes from the measurement, always go up โ a slightly loose ring is far easier to resize than one that won't go on.
Men's engagement and wedding rings commonly range from 4 mm to 12 mm wide. A wider band covers more surface area of the finger and exerts more pressure, making it feel tighter than a narrow ring of the exact same measured size. The wider the band, the more you need to size up to maintain the same comfortable fit.
Thin rings that sit like a standard ring. Order exactly your measured size with no adjustment needed. Uncommon for men's engagement rings.
No size adjustment neededThe most common width for men's engagement and wedding rings. Order half a size (0.5) larger than your measured circumference size for comfortable day-long wear.
+ยฝ size recommendedBold wide bands used in many men's engagement styles. Order a full size (1.0) larger than your measured size. These rings can feel significantly tighter than narrow rings.
+1 full size requiredFor every 2 mm of additional band width beyond 4 mm, add approximately ยผ size. A 10 mm band needs roughly +ยพ to +1 full size compared to your measured size. When in doubt, size up rather than down โ wide rings can be sized down more easily than sized up.

Buying a men's engagement ring as a surprise? These strategies let you find his size without him knowing.
Discreetly borrow a ring he already wears on the same finger. Measure the inner diameter by tracing it on paper or placing a ruler across the inside. Return it before he notices. This is the most accurate secret method by far.
While he's asleep, gently wrap a thin piece of string or dental floss loosely around his ring finger on the intended hand. Mark where it overlaps with a pen, then measure the marked length in mm the next day. Works best for deep sleepers!
Close friends, siblings, or parents may already know his ring size, or can ask him directly without raising suspicion. This is a low-risk option and is surprisingly effective โ many men have discussed ring sizes with close friends before.
If your fingers are similar in size, have a jeweller measure your own ring finger on the same hand, note the size, then estimate the difference. Many couples' ring fingers are within 1โ2 sizes of each other, making this a useful starting reference.
Casually try on rings together at a jewellery store under the pretense of helping a "friend" choose a ring. Note which size fits his ring finger naturally. This works especially well if framed as a fun outing with no engagement context.
If all methods fail, buy US Size 10 / AU Tยฝ โ the most commonly purchased men's engagement ring size. If it doesn't fit, most jewellers offer one free resize on engagement rings. A slightly large ring is always easier to deal with than one that won't go on at all.
Proportional inner diameter circles for men's sizes US 8 to US 13. Always confirm with a ruler in mm.
The single biggest mistake in men's ring sizing. Ordering the exact measured size for a 8โ10 mm band will result in a ring that is uncomfortably tight. Always add ยฝโ1 size for wide bands.
โ Add ยฝ size (6โ8mm) or 1 full size (9mm+)Women's ring size guides often only cover sizes 5โ8. Men's sizes typically start at 8. Using a women's guide leads to confusion and errors when looking up men's sizes in the chart.
โ Always use a men's-specific size chartThe dominant hand is typically half a size larger. Most right-handed men's left ring finger is smaller than their right ring finger. Confirm which hand the ring will be worn on before measuring.
โ Measure the exact hand and fingerWhile the average is US 9, men's ring sizes vary from US 6 to US 16+. Assuming average results in an incorrect size approximately 50% of the time. Always measure โ even an approximate method beats guessing.
โ Always measure โ even onceMen's knuckles are often noticeably larger than the base of the finger. A ring sized perfectly at the base may not pass over the knuckle at all. Always verify the ring can slide on and off comfortably.
โ Measure both base and knuckleFingers can swell by 1โ2 full sizes after exercise, manual labour, or in very hot weather. Measuring in these conditions will result in ordering a ring that is too large under normal conditions.
โ Measure at room temp after rest
