How to Find Your Dutch Ring Size at Home

Wrap a narrow, non-stretch paper strip around the intended finger, mark the overlap and measure the length in millimetres. Dutch shops may label a ring by circumference, such as 54, or show an inner-diameter reference, such as about 17.2 mm. Recording both values prevents confusion.

Ring sizing in the Netherlands is easiest to understand when you keep the physical measurement beside the size label. Many Dutch guides express European ring sizes as the inside circumference in whole millimetres. Under that approach, ringmaat 52 corresponds to approximately 52 mm circumference and 16.55 mm inner diameter.

Other shops, brands and jewellers place more emphasis on the binnendiameter. They may describe a ring as 16.5, 17, 17.5 or 18 mm, or provide a table that converts those diameter values to circumference sizes. Neither notation changes the ring’s physical opening; the important step is to identify which measurement the number represents.

The words commonly found on Dutch product pages include ringmaat for ring size, vingeromtrek for finger circumference, binnendiameter for inner diameter, maattabel for size chart and trouwring for wedding ring. When ordering from an international brand, also look for EU, US or UK labels.

• 🌡️Measure at a normal indoor temperature: cold hands can temporarily measure smaller, while warmth, exercise and fluid retention can make fingers fuller.
• 🕒Check more than once: take readings at different times and use the most consistent comfortable measurement.
• 🦴Account for the knuckle: the ring must pass the widest point but remain secure at the base. A jeweller can balance these two measurements when the knuckle is much larger.

Measure between winter-cold and summer-swollen extremes

Dutch weather can move between cool, damp and windy outdoor conditions and warm indoor environments. A finger measured immediately after cycling or walking outside in winter may be temporarily slimmer. In warm summer weather, during exercise or after a salty meal, the same finger may feel fuller.

For a practical year-round fit, let your hands settle at a comfortable indoor temperature, then measure more than once. A correctly fitted ring should pass the knuckle with gentle resistance and remain secure without creating pain, numbness or a deep persistent mark.

• 1️⃣Write down circumference and diameter: for example, 54.0 mm circumference and 17.19 mm inner diameter.
• 2️⃣Identify the seller’s notation: check whether the dropdown uses EU circumference, diameter, US numbers or UK letters.

• 4️⃣Confirm resizing: find out whether the metal, setting and engraving allow later adjustment.
• 5️⃣Read return terms before personalisation: engraved and made-to-measure rings may be treated differently from standard stock.

First check the column heading, then compare the measurement

A dropdown that lists 50, 52, 54 and 56 is usually presenting circumference-style EU sizes. A dropdown that lists 16, 16.5, 17, 17.5 and 18 is more likely to be using inner diameter in millimetres. Some brands simplify or round these values, while others use their own collection-specific size steps. The safest order of comparison is: measurement unit, physical measurement, then international label.

When a product page offers only one number without a clear heading, open the maattabel or contact customer service before ordering. A useful message is: “My finger circumference is 54 mm and the inner diameter of my comfortable ring is 17.2 mm. Which option should I select for this model?” This gives the seller enough information to identify its notation without relying on a conversion guess.

Check the band design before rounding

Do not apply the same rounding rule to every ring. A narrow open ring, a broad wedding band, a chunky signet ring and a full-eternity band can feel different even with the same nominal opening. If only sizes 52 and 54 are available for a 53 mm measurement, ask which size the brand recommends for the specific width and inner profile.

Keep a written measurement record

Save the date, finger, hand, circumference, diameter method and time of day. This is especially helpful when comparing multiple Dutch shops or ordering matching wedding bands. It also creates a clear reference if the jeweller requests a re-check before engraving or production.

Example 1 — finger circumference of 52 mm

A paper-strip measurement of 52 mm points to EU circumference size 52. The calculated inner diameter is about 16.55 mm. A Dutch seller may therefore show 52 in an omtrek table or approximately 16.5 in a diameter table.

Example 2 — existing ring diameter of 17.2 mm

Multiplying 17.2 by π gives a circumference of roughly 54.0 mm. The nearest whole EU circumference size is 54. Compare the retailer’s rounding and available stock sizes before checkout.

Example 3 — finger circumference of 5.8 cm

Convert centimetres to millimetres: 5.8 × 10 = 58 mm. The approximate inner diameter is 18.46 mm, with international conversions shown in the chart.

Example 4 — a result between 55 and 56 mm

Repeat the measurement and consider the band width. Do not automatically round down for a broad ring. Ask whether the model is supplied in every whole size, selected even sizes or an intermediate custom size.

• 💎Engagement rings: confirm whether the shoulders, halo, tension setting or pavé stones restrict resizing. Provide the jeweller with both circumference and diameter.
• 💒Wedding rings: consider width, comfort-fit interior and whether the ring will sit beside another band. A stacked set can feel tighter than one ring alone.
• 🎁Surprise gifts: discreetly measure a ring worn on the correct finger. Do not estimate from age, height or an average size.
• 🌍International brands: do not assume a number has the same meaning everywhere. Send the measurement in millimetres when converting from US or UK sizing.
• 🔨Custom and engraved work: approve the final ringmaat, band width and internal profile in writing before production begins.
