In everyday French jewellery retail, taille de bague usually follows the inner circumference in millimetres. It is broadly aligned with the common European metric designation, so French size 54 and EU size 54 normally refer to approximately the same physical circumference. Conversion to US or UK sizes is approximate because those systems use different steps.

Choose the finger and hand on which the ring will be worn. The same finger on the left and right hand can differ, especially on the dominant hand.
Wrap a strip of paper or flexible measuring tape around the base of the finger. It should touch the skin without digging in and must still pass over the knuckle.
Mark the overlap with a fine pen, lay the strip flat and measure the length in millimetres. A reading of 52 mm points to French size 52.
Take at least three readings during the day. Avoid measuring immediately after cold exposure, intense exercise, a hot shower or when the hands are unusually swollen.
When the result falls between sizes, ask the retailer whether the model is available in consecutive sizes and whether a broad band, stacked design or comfort-fit interior changes the recommendation.
A ring worn on another finger may be misleading. Choose a round, comfortable ring with a similar width whenever possible.
Place the ring flat and measure straight across the widest internal opening through the centre. Do not include the metal edges.
