Everything you need to know about adjustable (open-band) rings โ how they work, how to size them, which fingers they fit best, and expert wearing tips
An adjustable ring (also called an open-band or open-shank ring) has a small gap at the bottom of the band. This gap allows you to gently squeeze or widen the band to fit almost any finger size โ no jeweller resizing needed. They are extremely popular for gifts, fashion rings, knuckle rings, and toe rings.
The band is not a full closed circle โ it has an intentional gap at the base so you can expand or compress it to your finger.
Because one size fits most, adjustable rings are ideal as surprise gifts when you don't know the exact ring size of the recipient.
Very popular for fashion jewellery, knuckle rings, midi rings, and toe rings where an exact fit is less critical.
Place the adjustable ring on your finger without squeezing it. It should feel loose โ this is your starting position.
Using your thumb and index finger of the other hand, apply gentle equal pressure from both sides of the band to reduce the gap and tighten the fit.
The ring should slide over your knuckle with slight resistance, then sit snugly at the base of the finger. It should not spin freely or cut off circulation.
If too tight, gently widen the gap with both thumbs. If too loose, squeeze again slightly. Make small adjustments each time.
Metal (especially silver and brass) can weaken and crack at the gap if adjusted too many times. Aim to get the right size in a few tries.
Do not open or close the band more than 2โ3 mm in a single adjustment. Bending too aggressively can cause the metal to crack at the gap or permanently deform the ring's shape. Always make small, gradual adjustments.

These open-band ring illustrations show the gap position and relative sizes across different adjustable ring types:
Most popular material for adjustable rings. Soft enough for easy bending, holds shape well.
โ Best ChoiceAffordable and very flexible. Ideal for fashion jewellery. May tarnish over time.
โ GreatLower gold alloy content makes it workable. Fine gold (24ct) is too soft and too expensive.
~ SuitableVery durable but harder to adjust. Not recommended โ risk of cracking at the gap.
โ AvoidToo hard and dense for open-band design. Will crack at the gap if bent. Never use.
โ NeverExtremely flexible and great for wire-wrap coil adjustable rings. Very beginner-friendly.
