How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Method 1 — Paper Strip (Most Accurate)

1

Measure in the evening (6pm – 9pm)

Fingers reach their natural maximum size by end of day. Measuring in the morning when fingers are smallest will give an inaccurately small result.

2

Cut a thin strip of paper ~1cm × 10cm

A thin piece of string or dental floss also works perfectly. Avoid stretchy materials like elastic bands or fabric tape.

3

Wrap snugly around the base of the finger

Wrap at the base of the finger you plan to wear the ring on. Ensure the strip can also pass comfortably over your knuckle — the ring must too.

4

Mark and measure in millimetres

Mark with a pen exactly where the paper overlaps. Lay flat on a ruler and record the length in mm — this is your finger circumference.

5

Measure 3 times and use the average

Repeat 3 times and average the values for accuracy. Match your circumference to the chart above — if between two sizes, always size up.

Method 2 — Measure an Existing Ring (Ring Diameter)

1

Choose a ring that fits the same finger well

Select a ring you already own that fits comfortably on the specific finger you want to size. Width matters — use a ring of similar band width.

2

Measure the inner diameter with a ruler

Lay the ring flat and measure straight across the inside opening in millimetres. This is the inner diameter.

3

Match the diameter to the AU chart above

Find the closest value in the Diameter (mm) column of the chart to identify your Australian ring size. If between two values, choose the larger size.

📐 Conversion Formulas

Diameter → Circumference
Circumference (mm) = Diameter (mm) × 3.14159
Example: 17.13 mm × 3.14159 = 53.8 mm → Australian Size N
Circumference → Diameter
Diameter (mm) = Circumference (mm) ÷ 3.14159
Example: 61.3 mm ÷ 3.14159 = 19.51 mm → Australian Size T
Inches → Millimetres
mm = Inches × 25.4
Example: 0.675″ × 25.4 = 17.15 mm → Australian Size N (Women's)

What Affects Ring Size

🕗

Time of Day

Fingers are smallest in the morning and largest in the evening (6–9pm). Always measure at end of day for the most comfortable, accurate fit.

🌡️

Temperature

Cold shrinks fingers; heat swells them. A 10°C change can shift your size by half a letter. Always measure at room temperature (20–22°C).

🧂

Diet & Salt

High-sodium meals cause temporary water retention in the fingers. Avoid measuring for several hours after eating salty or processed foods.

🏋️

Physical Activity

Exercise temporarily increases blood flow and swells fingers. Wait at least 1–2 hours after working out before measuring your ring size.

⚖️

Weight Changes

Significant weight gain or loss directly changes finger size. Always re-measure if your body weight has changed noticeably since your last fitting.

💍

Band Width

Wider bands (6mm+) fit tighter than narrow bands of the same size. If ordering a wide men's band, go up ½ a size from your measured AU size.

💡

Ring Sizing Tips for Men & Women

  • 🕗 Best time to measure: Always measure in the evening between 6pm and 9pm when fingers are at their maximum natural size. Avoid cold mornings.
  • 👐 Measure the right hand and finger: Left and right hands differ in size — always measure the specific finger on the specific hand you plan to wear the ring on.
  • 📏 Size up when between sizes: If your circumference falls between two sizes in the chart, always choose the larger AU size. It is far easier to resize a ring down than up.
  • 💍 Wide bands for men: Most men's rings are 6–8mm wide. Wide bands fit approximately half a size tighter — order ½ size up from your measured size when buying a wide band.
  • 🔁 Measure 3 separate times: Take three measurements and average them. Minor variations in how tightly you wrap can affect the reading — averaging gives the most reliable result.
  • 🇦🇺 AU = UK sizing: Australian sizes are identical to UK sizes. When ordering from a UK jeweller, your AU size applies directly. Always convert when ordering from a US store.
  • 🔍 Confirm with a jeweller: For expensive rings like engagement rings or wedding bands, always visit a local jeweller for professional sizing using calibrated ring gauges.
❓

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common women's ring size in Australia? ▾
The most common women's ring size in Australia is AU N to N½, which corresponds to US sizes 6¾ to 7. This falls in the medium range with an inner circumference of approximately 53.8–54.5 mm and diameter of 17.1–17.4 mm.
What is the most common men's ring size in Australia? ▾
The most common men's ring size in Australia is AU T to U, equivalent to US sizes 10–10½. These correspond to inner circumferences of 62.3–63.5 mm and diameters of 19.84–20.20 mm.
Are Australian and UK ring sizes the same? ▾
Yes — Australian and UK ring sizes are identical. Both use the same alphabetical system (A to Z+) with the same measurements. You can use your AU size directly when ordering from a UK jeweller.
What is AU women's size N in US size? ▾

Do men and women use different AU ring size systems? ▾
No — Australia uses the same letter system for both men and women. The difference is that women typically wear sizes F–R, while men wear sizes J½–Z+. There is no separate men's or women's system in AU/UK sizing.
Can I measure ring size with a string? ▾
Yes — string works well as long as it is non-stretchy. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger, mark the overlap point, then lay it flat on a ruler and measure in millimetres. Match the measurement to the Circumference column in the chart above.
Should I size up or down if I'm between ring sizes? ▾
Always size up when between two sizes. A slightly larger ring is more comfortable and easier for a jeweller to resize down if needed. This is especially important for wide men's bands which tend to fit tighter than narrow rings of the same size.
