Beginner Ring Size Guide

A ring size is simply a standardised number or letter that corresponds to the inner circumference or diameter of a ring — and therefore the thickness of your finger. When a ring fits correctly, it slides on comfortably over the knuckle and sits snugly at the base of the finger without spinning or pinching.

Different countries use different sizing systems. The US and Canada use numbers (like size 6 or 7), the UK and Australia use letters (like L or N), and Europe uses the inner circumference in millimetres. India and Japan use their own number systems too. All of these systems ultimately refer to the same physical measurement — just expressed differently.

• 🌡️Measure at the right time. Fingers swell when warm and shrink when cold. The best time to measure is mid-afternoon when your fingers are at a normal, stable size. Avoid measuring first thing in the morning or after exercise.
• 🔁Measure 3 times and average. Take three separate measurements throughout the day and use the average. This accounts for natural fluctuation in finger size.
• 👆Always measure the exact finger. Ring sizes differ between fingers — and even between your left and right hand. Your dominant hand is usually about ½ size larger. Always measure the specific finger the ring will be worn on.
• ⬆️Round up if between sizes. If your measurement falls between two sizes, always go up to the larger size. A slightly loose ring can be resized down more easily than a ring that's too tight.
• 💍Wide bands need a bigger size. Rings wider than 6 mm fit tighter on the finger than narrow bands. For wide-band rings, go up ½ to 1 full size from your measured size to ensure a comfortable fit.
• 🔑Check the knuckle too. If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, size to your knuckle — otherwise the ring won't go on. You can use a ring size adjuster to stop it spinning once on.
• 🛒Confirm the system before buying online. If ordering from an overseas jeweller, always confirm which size system they use. A size "6" in the US is not the same as an Indian size 6. Use a conversion chart or ask the store directly.
• 🏪Visit a jeweller for free sizing. If you're unsure, walk into any local jeweller and ask to be sized. It takes less than a minute, costs nothing, and gives you an accurate result from a professional ring mandrel.

• ❌Measuring in the morning. Fingers are at their smallest first thing in the morning. Measuring then can lead to buying a ring that's too small by afternoon or evening.
• ❌Measuring the wrong finger or hand. Many beginners measure their right index finger when they actually need the left ring finger. Always measure exactly where the ring will be worn.
• ❌Confusing size systems. Assuming a US size 7 is the same as a UK size 7 — they are completely different. US size 7 = UK size O. Always check which system a jeweller is using.
• ❌Not accounting for band width. Trying on a narrow sample ring but ordering a wide-band ring without going up in size. Wide bands always feel tighter — size up ½ to 1 size for bands over 6 mm wide.
• ❌Printing a ring sizer at the wrong scale. If you use a printable ring sizer PDF, make sure you print at exactly 100% — no "fit to page" or scaling. Even a small scaling error will give you the wrong size.
