How to Find Your Indian Ring Size at Home

Wrap a narrow non-stretch paper strip around the intended finger, mark the overlap and measure the length in millimetres. Indian jewellery retailers commonly use numerical ring sizes, but charts can differ slightly. As a practical example, a circumference close to 51.9 mm and an inner diameter near 16.5 mm correspond to Indian size 12 in the Tanishq reference chart used on this page.

Indian jewellers commonly use numerical local sizes

Indian jewellery stores and e-commerce websites frequently list ring sizes as whole numbers. A product may be offered in size 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16, while a broader chart may run from size 1 to 30. These numbers are not the same as US sizes. For example, Indian size 12 in the reference chart corresponds to about 51.9 mm circumference and 16.5 mm inner diameter, while the nearest US size is around 6.

There is no safe reason to assume that every Indian seller maps each number to exactly the same diameter. Retail charts may round values, use a different historical conversion table or offer only selected sizes. A ring-size number is only useful when it is tied to a measurable internal dimension. Indian jewellers may use charts supplied by different manufacturers, and imported rings may retain US, UK, EU or Japanese labels. Marketplace listings can also combine several systems in a single drop-down menu. As a result, two products labelled with the same number may not always have exactly the same internal opening.

Manufacturing tolerances, final polishing, plating thickness and the shape of the inside wall can add smaller differences. A comfort-fit ring has a rounded inner profile and may feel different from a flat interior even when both have a similar diameter. Wide wedding bands contact more skin and often feel tighter than slim solitaire rings.

For an expensive engagement ring, wedding band or custom order, request a written confirmation showing the finished inner diameter or circumference. This is especially important for full-eternity bands, tension settings, rings with stones around the shank and designs that cannot be resized easily.

The Bureau of Indian Standards describes hallmarking as the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate precious-metal content in an article. BIS states that the scheme aims to protect consumers against irregular purity and to require manufacturers to maintain legal fineness standards.

For gold jewellery, BIS information lists permitted fineness grades including 14K 585, 18K 750, 20K 833, 22K 916, 23K 958 and 24KS 995. Silver hallmarking grades are separately defined. The applicable requirements, exemptions and district coverage can change, so the official BIS pages and current orders should be checked rather than relying on an old social-media graphic.

Before paying, also verify that the jeweller is appropriately registered where required, obtain a detailed bill and make sure the description, net metal weight, fineness and charges are clear.

The same measurement principles apply whether you shop in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Kochi or online. The practical difference is usually the seller's chart, stock range and resizing policy rather than the city itself.

Traditional gold jewellery stores may use physical mandrels and metal sizing rings. Modern national brands often publish downloadable charts, while independent designers may work directly from inner diameter. Fashion-jewellery marketplaces sometimes offer “adjustable” or “free size” rings; these still need a comfortable minimum and maximum opening and should not be forced repeatedly because the metal can weaken.

For orders delivered between states, save the product page, ring-size chart, promised delivery date and exchange terms. Inspect the ring promptly after arrival. Do not wear, engrave or alter it until you have confirmed the fit if the retailer's return policy requires the product to remain unused.
