When shopping for a ring in Norway, sizes such as 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62 or 64 normally refer to the ring's inner circumference in millimetres. A size 54 therefore represents an internal circumference close to 54 mm, not US size 54 and not a 54 mm diameter. This direct relationship makes a careful finger-circumference measurement especially useful.

The Norwegian term ringstørrelse means “ring size”. A jeweller or gullsmed may discuss fingeromkrets (finger circumference), innvendig diameter (inner diameter), bred ring (wide ring) or a størrelsesguide (size guide). Providing both the requested size and the measurement in millimetres reduces confusion when ordering from a Norwegian or international website.
