Record Exact Millimetres
Measure a correct existing ring's inner diameter or the intended finger's circumference.
Choose Final Band Width
Tell the jeweller whether the ring will be narrow, wide, tapered or worn in a stack.
Specify Interior Profile
Confirm standard flat fit, comfort fit or another custom interior before production.
Check Resizing Limits
Full-eternity, inlay, tension, engraved and hard-metal designs may be difficult to alter.
measurement
better precision
diameter and circumference
must be measured
Enter a correctly fitting ring's inner diameter or the intended finger's circumference to estimate US, EU and UK references
Use a ring from the correct finger
Select a perfectly round ring worn comfortably on the intended finger. A ring from another hand, finger or person is only a rough estimate.
Match the planned width and fit where possible
A narrow standard-fit ring may not predict an 8 mm comfort-fit band. The closer the reference ring is to the custom design, the more useful the measurement.
Measure the clear inner diameter
Use a calliper or precise ruler through the true centre. Exclude both metal edges and record at least two decimal places in millimetres.
Rotate and repeat
Turn the ring 90 degrees. If the readings differ, the opening may be oval and should be measured professionally on a ring stick.
Send the number with context
Example: โInside diameter 17.32 mm, fits right ring finger, reference band 2.5 mm wide, planned custom band 6 mm comfort fit.โ
Use rigid gauges for final approval
A paper strip can narrow the likely range, but a custom ring deserves a rigid finger-gauge measurement. ISO 8653 describes ring sticks and matching finger-gauge sets as the formal tools used to designate ring size.
Measure the knuckle and finger base
When the knuckle is much larger than the finger base, the ring must pass the knuckle without spinning excessively afterward. The jeweller may discuss sizing beads, an internal spring or another custom solution.
Measure at ordinary temperature
Take several readings when the hand is not unusually hot, cold, swollen or dehydrated. Avoid approving a permanent custom size from one extreme reading.
Try the intended width
GIA recommends wide-finger gauges for rings wider than 4 mm. A wide band generally feels tighter than a narrow band in the same nominal size.
Document the final professional reading
Ask the jeweller to write the size system, gauge width, fit profile and millimetre measurement on the order form.
Band Width
Wide bands contact more skin and normally feel tighter. Try a gauge close to the finished width.
Comfort Fit
A rounded interior moves over the knuckle differently from a flat standard interior. The maker must know which profile is intended.
Stacking Width
Several rings worn together behave like a wider band and may require additional room.
Large Knuckle
A significant difference between knuckle and base can cause spinning; custom stabilising features may help.
Top-Heavy Setting
A large centre stone may rotate even when the ring size is technically correct. Do not automatically make the ring too tight.
Full Eternity Stones
Stones around the full circumference can make later resizing impractical or structurally risky.
Inlay Construction
Wood, meteorite, antler and continuous inlays may prevent ordinary cutting and resizing.
Hard Materials
Tungsten, ceramic and some alternative-metal designs may need replacement rather than resizing.
Engraving and Pattern
Continuous engraving, milgrain or geometric patterns can be interrupted when a ring is altered.

Use this chart as a communication reference, not as the sole production instruction. Retailers and makers can round differently. A custom order should include physical millimetres, final band width and interior profile.
Print at 100% or โActual Sizeโ
After printing any ring guide, measure the calibration line below with a physical ruler. It must equal exactly 50 mm. Reprint when the line is shorter or longer.
Correct Custom Fit
Passes the knuckle with gentle resistance, remains stable at the base and feels comfortable through normal daily changes.
Too Tight
Causes pain, numbness, strong bulging or cannot be removed safely after ordinary swelling.
Too Loose
Slides over the knuckle easily, falls off during normal movement or leaves a top-heavy setting constantly rotating.
Design-Specific Issue
Rotation, pressure or rubbing may come from width, profile, stones or stackingโnot only from the nominal size.
Full-eternity and stone-heavy rings
Ritani notes that full-eternity designs commonly cannot be resized because stones continue around the entire band. Accurate first-time sizing is therefore critical.
Wide or comfort-fit wedding bands
GIA distinguishes wide-band measurement from standard narrow-band measurement. Use gauges that imitate the intended width and interior profile.
Continuous inlays and alternative materials
Some custom inlay rings cannot be cut and resized without destroying the continuous insert. Ask whether replacement is the only remedy.
Large knuckles or spinning rings
A custom jeweller can evaluate sizing beads, internal springs, hinged designs or other stabilising approaches without making the ring painfully small.
International custom orders
Have local professionals provide the diameter in millimetres and the named sizing system before sending irreversible production approval overseas.
Send one complete written specification
Avoid scattered messages. Put the measurement, size system and construction details in one final approval note.
Approve the final size separately from the design
Confirm the size after the width, profile, stone coverage and material have been finalised. A design change can make the earlier sizing assumption obsolete.
Read remake, return and resizing terms
Custom, engraved and made-to-order rings are often subject to stricter policies. Ask what happens if the finished ring does not fit and who pays for a remake or adjustment.
Keep the final written approval
Save the measurements, diagrams, seller chart and the maker's confirmation. This record is important if the delivered ring differs from the agreed specification.
Custom sizing is a design specification
For a ready-made ring, customers often choose a label from a menu. For a custom ring, size must be treated as part of the engineering brief alongside width, thickness, interior profile, material and stone layout.
Start with physical measurements
Diameter and circumference describe the actual opening. Size labels vary internationally, so the physical millimetres should remain attached to every conversion.
Match the measuring tool to the intended ring
A thin gauge cannot perfectly predict a wide band. GIA specifically separates standard, tapered, wide, bridal-set and convex-interior sizing considerations.
Comfort fit and standard fit are not interchangeable
A comfort-fit interior is rounded, while a standard interior is flatter. Custom makers may recommend different sizing treatment depending on the width and profile.
Plan for the knuckle and ring stability
The correct size must pass the knuckle and remain stable at the base. Large differences may require a custom stabilising feature rather than an excessively tight ring.
Understand resizing before production
Full-eternity stones, continuous inlays, hard alternative metals, tension settings and detailed patterns can restrict later alteration. The safest resizing plan is often accurate first-time sizing plus a clear remake policy.
Use more than one professional check
For expensive or irreversible work, obtaining agreement from two reputable jewellers and measuring a similar-width reference ring reduces cross-border and workshop misunderstandings.
Preserve the complete measurement record
Keep the date, hand, finger, gauge type, width, fit, diameter, circumference, chosen size system and maker approval. This becomes the traceable specification for the finished piece.
